PLEASE NOTE: In the near future, there will be a downloadable “Sacristan Manual,” which will outline the complete duties and responsibilities for sacristans. Please check back within the next couple of months, as this manual is currently being compiled. In the meantime, if your question is not addressed below, you are most welcome to contact Mrs. Mentzel or the Parish office for this information.

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:

  • Check over the schedule carefully and ASAP after receiving it from Mrs. Mentzel via e-mail. If you cannot perform your sacristan duties, you MUST get a substitute ASAP. It is your responsibility to then inform Mrs. Mentzel (410-744-7613) AND Fr. Whatley (410-744-6560, ext. 1) as to your substitute’s name and the Mass(es) for which this sacristan will be covering for you.
  • Please make sure to sign in and out for your sacristan duties; otherwise, you will not get paid for the Mass(es) for which you have been a sacristan, or not get paid the correct amount.
  • If you have any problems or questions regarding your duties, please call Mrs. Mentzel at the number listed above or on the “Sacristan Phone Directory,” or through e-mail.

Below are the times that all Sacristans MUST arrive for each Mass and their duties:

  • For the 4:00 p.m. Mass, you must arrive at 2:30 p.m. and immediately unlock the Breezeway and Church doors and turn on the lights for Confessions. At 3:30 p.m., start to set up for the 4:00 p.m. Mass. After the 4:00 p.m. Mass, make sure that everything is put away, the doors are locked and the lights are turned off.
  • For the 7:30 a.m. / 9:00 a.m. Masses, you must arrive at 7:00 a.m. and immediately unlock the Breezeway and Church doors and turn on the lights. Then, start to set up for the 7:30 a.m. Mass. At 8:30 a.m., start to set up for the 9:00 a.m. Mass. After the 9:00 a.m. Mass, make sure that everything is put away or just leave the items on the vestibule in the Sacristy for the next Sacristan.
  • For the 9:00 a.m. / 11:00 a.m. Masses, you must arrive at 8:30 a.m. and immediately unlock the Chapel doors and turn on the lights. Then, start to set up for the 9:00 a.m. Mass. After the 9:00 a.m. Mass, start to set up for the 11:00 a.m. Mass. After the 11:00 a.m. Mass, make sure that everything is put away, the doors are locked and the lights are turned off.
  • For the 5:00 p.m. Mass, you must arrive at 4:30 p.m. and immediately unlock the Breezeway and Church doors and turn on the lights. Then, start to set up for the 5:00 p.m. Mass. After the 5:00 p.m. Mass, make sure that everything is put away, the doors are locked and the lights are turned off.

IMPORTANT: It will now be the responsibility of the Sacristan to light the candles for ALL Masses instead of the Altar Servers. The candles should be lit about 15 minutes prior to the beginning of each Mass. Many Altar Servers are arriving 5 minutes prior to the start of Mass, and it is not enough time for them to light the candles.

As always, thank you for your commitment to serve as a Sacristan at St. Mark Church. Your help is truly appreciated to the true mission of the Church.
